Giovanni (John) Diodati
Giovanni (John) Diodati is a Director and Principle Associate at EVOQ. Acknowledged as a leader in North American heritage conservation, he has honed his expertise in materials conservation and traditional building practices over the last three decades. John designs durable and cost-effective solutions, which he tailors to the specific nature of the material and the history of the building. He also uses his personal archive of detailing and performance data to inform his contemporary projects, often crafting modern architectural responses with traditional materials. He is an effective communicator, skilled at achieving consensus with multiple stakeholders and perspectives and he usually leads a team of specialized consultants. His portfolio of award-winning projects includes some of Canada's most important historic buildings, including the West Block, Parliament Hill Ottawa, the Mappin Wing of the Governor-General’s residence in Ottawa, and the Harbour Commissioners’ Building, Montreal.
John’s analytical abilities are supplemented by his intense curiosity and scholarship. He has designed and implemented numerous monitoring and maintenance programs that have advanced understanding in the twinned fields of Heritage Conservation and Sustainability. By promoting research and knowledge sharing, he bridges the gap between theory and practice. John has served as Vice-president of the International Association for Preservation Technology (APT), Chairman of the Continuing Education committees of the Ordre des architectes du Québec (OAQ) and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), and chairman of the technical committee of the Institut de la maçonnerie du Québec. He is also a frequent speaker to his peers, student groups and the general public.
John is a graduate of the McGill University School of Architecture.
