La Grande Ourse: Harmony on the Shores of Lake Memphremagog
The latest addition to La Grande Ourse hamlet, nestled on the picturesque shores of Lake Memphremagog, elegantly bridges tradition and modernity. This project has given new life to an existing log structure while enriching it with a contemporary reinterpretation of iconic Japanese elements: a Chashitsu tea house, an outdoor Ofuro bath, and a seamlessly integrated sauna.
In keeping with the existing pavilions, this new creation emphasizes fluidity between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing activities to flow naturally from one area to another. The tea house is centered around a hearth that doubles as a table, set upon a pinwheel-patterned slate floor that subtly evokes the traditional arrangement of tatami mats.
The Tokonoma, an alcove traditionally reserved for scrolls in Japanese architecture, is transformed into a generous bay window offering exceptional views of the natural surroundings, inviting contemplation and meditation.
Additional pavilions will soon enhance this unique architectural ensemble. Stay tuned!
