Extension of the Nassivik Residence - Creation of Classrooms
The Nassivik residence in Kangiqsujuaq is a place of learning for the community's young adults. In response to a space shortage, the Kativik Ilisarniliriniq school board commissioned EVOQ to expand the building, adding four pre-college classrooms, a lounge area, administrative offices and a meeting room. The orientation of the spaces optimizes natural lighting throughout the year.
The extension, lowered by 1.8 metres, links the residence to the center by a staircase, and its granular backfill makes it comparable to a single storey, avoiding the need to install sprinklers. The interior layout follows a central spine, opening to the relaxation area. The volumetry is inspired by the architectural lines of the existing building, while reinterpreting the surrounding mountain landscape.
Inspired by mussel gathering under the ice, the artwork in the lounge is entitled “The Legend of the Mermaid of Kangiqsujuaq”, by Ulaayu Pilurtuut.
