McGill University – Martlet House

Martlet House, former headquarters of the Seagram Company, is modeled after a 16th century Scottish Baronial castle. Designed by architect David Jerome Spence, it was completed in 1928, with subsequent additions in 1931, 1947, and 1955. The building is a source of pride for McGill and an example of corporate giving by alumni who value Montreal’s built heritage.

The downtown Montreal landmark was donated to McGill in 2002, and the university mandated EVOQ to renovate the building’s interior to house the offices of Development and Alumni Relations.

In 2011, EVOQ was mandated to provide full architectural services to stabilize and restore the masonry on the front façade. The restoration included the repair or replacement of certain stones, repointing and cleaning; restoration of metal works; and replacement of sections of slate roofing and copper flashing including the loosened slate shingles that had been removed from the roof as a precautionary measure the year prior.
