Baby Point Heritage Conservation District Study and Plan
The Baby Point Heritage Conservation District (HCD) Study & Plan encompasses 222 properties (375 properties in the Study Phase) on a promontory sloping toward the Humber River. Baby Point is a planned Garden Suburb surveyed by Robert Home Smith in the Humber Valley Surveys, and is defined by its curvilinear roadways, front yard setbacks, and a predominance of English Cottage and Revival styles. The area is also significant as the location of Teiaiagon, the mid-to-late seventeenth century Haudenosaunee village. The Study identified the heritage character, and the Plan developed policies and guidelines with illustrations and best practice recommendations. The Plan objectives include conserving the natural, social, cultural and community values of the District, including the Home Smith Company’s design of picturesque residential and landscape character, and recognizing the place’s enduring connection and importance to Indigenous communities. The project included engagement with community throughout the Study and Plan phases including newsletters, in-person and virtual session workshops, open houses and community consultations. EVOQ also participated in the city led-Indigenous engagement.
