Block 2 Redevelopment
Block 2 occupies a unique position in Ottawa, at the cusp of ‘town’ and ‘crown’: the City of Ottawa and Parliament Hill. Block 2’s northern façade along Wellington Street is formal and dignified, in keeping with its prominent location opposite Parliament Hill. Meanwhile, its southern façade on Sparks Street reflects the informal, lively commercial atmosphere with its human scale, varied storefronts, and dynamic roofline.
EVOQ Architecture, as the heritage architect on the team led by Zeidler Architecture and David Chipperfield Architects, is responsible for the conservation plan and rehabilitation of seven historic buildings on the Block. The design integrates these structures into new construction, respecting the dignified character of Wellington Street while enhancing Sparks Street's vibrancy.
This project honours Canada's heritage through a conservation approach grounded in historic, indigenous, aesthetic, and environmental values. It will provide office space for the Senate and House of Commons, support parliamentary functions, and include renovated retail spaces, embodying a sustainable and inclusive future for Block 2.
