Christ Church Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral is a Gothic Revival building constructed in 1859. Its 38-metre spire, comprising a steel structure clad in cast aluminum panels, is a significant feature of the downtown Montreal landscape. The project to restore the spire involved consolidating the steel structure, restoring the cast aluminum panels and cross, as well as restoring and repairing the 4 clocks and the bell.

The restoration project was initiated following an extended period of minimal maintenance due in large measure to access difficulties. With the steel spire’s endoskeleton reaching the end of its useful life, EVOQ was given the task of restoring it. During the survey phases, it was observed that the steel structure had deteriorated more than was initially believed and that its integrity was compromised.

In addition, the interior access systems, which were no longer safe, needed major upgrading, making regular maintenance and inspections impossible. The Cathedral and EVOQ therefore had to plan and implement large-scale repairs in the very short term in order to preserve this heritage gem.
