City of Gatineau Modern Heritage Inventory
In 2022, the City of Gatineau took the exceptional initiative to assemble an inventory of more than 160 buildings and building complexes of interest built between 1940 and 1980. Formed in 2002 through the amalgamation of five municipalities, Gatineau features a rich architectural and urban diversity the reflects the region’s historical evolution. The inventory sought to enhance and consolidate data for the recently merged municipality while deepening the understanding of its modern built heritage.
Acknowledging the challenges and unique characteristics of this heritage, EVOQ adopted a thematic analysis approach inspired by the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI). This method, grounded in Gatineau’s history and local context, was designed to serve as a practical resource for both city administrators and residents. Published online in March 2024, the Gatineau Modern Heritage Inventory is the first publicly accessible inventory of its kind in Quebec.
