Colonial Building

EVOQ Architecture undertook a rigorous heritage intervention on the Colonial Building in St. John's, the most significant historic government building in the province.  As part of the building’s conversion into a tourist and historical interpretation centre, EVOQ produced a comprehensive Historic Structure Reportintegrating (HSR) previous analyses, on-site investigations, and new recommendations, in accordance with Parks Canada's Standards and Guidelines.

The work encompassed the entire building. Exterior work included rehabilitation of the stone masonry envelope, the design of a new mixed timber-and-steel framed, wind-resistant pediment roof and restoration of the monumental entrance stairs to their original configuration. Interior work involved the restoration of heritage finishes — ornamental paintings, faux finishes, and plasterwork. Through every decision, it is the permanence of a symbol that has been preserved: that of a building which embodies the permanence and dignity of democracy in Newfoundland.
