Conservation Plan for the Former Royal Victoria Hospital Site
The site of the former Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) is an iconic institutional complex in Montreal. Established through philanthropic initiative in the late 19th century, the institution gradually expanded its footprint on the southern slopes of Mount Royal Park over successive expansions. The site forms a unique landscape on the mountainside, featuring pavilions of a variety of volumes and architectural styles. Since the hospital’s closure, most of these buildings have remained vacant.
The Société québécoise des infrastructures (SQI), the site’s manager, commissioned EVOQ to develop a conservation plan encompassing eight pavilions (both exterior and interior) and their surrounding landscape elements. This plan provides guiding principles and orientations to support decision-makers in determining the new uses and redevelopment proposals that will revitalize the site and its buildings while respecting their historical features.

The site’s built and landscaped elements contribute to the Island of Montreal’s rich cultural heritage. By promoting the retention and thoughtful transformation of existing structures and landscapes, the conservation plan aligns with an eco-responsible approach to urban planning and property management.
