Bell Building

As expert in architectural conservation, EVOQ was entrusted with two major mandates for the Bell Canada building (1928–1931), a 20-storey heritage skyscraper clad in Queenston limestone that stands as an emblematic example of 1930s commercial architecture in downtown Montreal.

For the exterior envelope, following thorough documentation and a rigorous condition assessment, EVOQ was able to preserve and restore the masonry façades using structural consolidation techniques, along with the targeted replacement of stones deemed irrecoverable. The restoration of the decorative aluminum friezes was carried out through the meticulous reproduction of elements using traditional casting methods.

Inside, EVOQ undertook the rehabilitation of the marble panels on the ground floor and in the elevator lobbies, developing a reversible anchoring system to stabilize fragile architectural elements. These interventions, guided by the principle of minimal intervention, preserve the visual and material integrity of the heritage components while ensuring their long-term functional viability.

All work prioritized the conservation of original materials, minimizing waste through rare and judicious replacement. This low-impact approach aligns with sustainable development goals by extending the lifecycle of existing components. Subtle upgrades, including careful mortar selection, improved anchoring and rainwater management systems, were integrated to enhance the long-term durability and environmental performance of the envelope.
