Fort Frederick

Fort Frederick is part of the Point Frederick Buildings National Historic Site of Canada and the Kingston Fortification National Historic Site of Canada. It is located at the southern tip of the Royal Military College of Canada. Constructed in 1846, the site consists of a Martello Tower (Classified Federal Heritage Building), Lunette and Ammunitions Storage Buildings (Recognized Federal Heritage Buildings), and a 200 meter long stone masonry defensive wall.

EVOQ prepared a condition assessment report of all the masonry structures at Fort Frederick, including the three-storey Martello tower and the 200m defensive wall. A restoration pilot project of a section of the defensive wall was carried out in order to test different repair strategies. The second pilot project focused on the tower with the conservation of one of the caponiere and a window. The results from these pilot project informed the contract document preparation for the subsequent phases.

This multi-year and multi-phase project began with a detailed investigations phase and continued with a first year pilot construction project. The objective was to assess the causes of the deterioration and to evaluate and compare repair options, which would then be carried forward for the larger restoration work. Crane surveys, exploratory openings and 3D laser scans were used to assess the existing condition of the structures. Different repair strategies were devised to address the deteriorations including grouting, rebuilding, and anchoring with localized consolidation. All proposed work was subject to FHBRO review and approval.
