Fort George Powder Magazine
Fort George National Historic Site is an 18th-century military complex located on the west bank near the mouth. With Ojdrovic Engineering, EVOQ restored the Powder Magazine, a small masonry building constructed in 1796 to store gun powder. A condition assessment of the building was performed, followed by investigations into areas where the walls and buttresses were bulging. The masonry stabilization work was limited to the buttresses which exhibited the greatest deterioration, while the rest of the walls were repointed with a hydraulic lime mortar. The masonry deterioration was exacerbated by an undersized and failing roof gutter. A new gutter was designed in keeping with traditional detailing, and the existing copper batten roof replaced. The copper shutters and doors were preserved with interventions limited to cleaning and adjusting their hinges. Severely damaged panels at the door were replaced. The wood lintels at the openings were consolidated and treated with a biocide.
