Heritage study of the Marie-Clarac Campus
Located on the banks of Rivière des Prairies, along Gouin Boulevard East, the Marie-Clarac Campus is a unique modern complex that contributes to the historical and architectural richness of the area, and of Montreal in general. Developed by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Mary in the early 1960s to plans by modern architect Pierre Cantin, the Campus includes a hospital, a school, residences for nuns and a chapel. The hospital wing is particularly distinctive for its innovative design, which focuses on the well-being of users, with colorful panels and generous curves that open up to the landscape and allow maximum sunlight into the patient rooms.
Given the unique nature of the site, any future intervention presents challenges of integration and compatibility with existing components. It must therefore be planned for the long term, and according to a global vision. To facilitate this planning, EVOQ Stratégies has produced a heritage interest study that includes guidelines for managing the property while respecting its characteristics.
The quality of future interventions depends on a sustainable approach that promotes decision-making, planning and actions based on a balance between economic, environmental, social and cultural considerations. By precisely defining heritage interest, this study is anchored in this approach, making it possible to build a consensus around the importance of the site and the criteria for its evolution.
