Hillside Townhouses
The Westmount project comprises four townhouse-style residences. The contemporary architectural language was shaped in direct reference to the neighboring residential project designed by architect Norbert Schoenauer, who himself was influenced by early 20th-century Central European and Scandinavian residential architecture.
The first three townhouses are built in a sawtooth pattern up to the fourth, which mirrors the corner of Hillside Street in a rhythmic fashion. The volumetric composition expresses an interlocking between a pale brick block and a dark metal one, which merge to create rich openings and exterior spaces. This change of material breaks up the expanse of brick along Metcalfe Avenue and references the scale and materiality of the houses to the north. The building sits on a limestone block base. High-relief brick bands lend a contemporary texture to this typical envelope.
Each unit benefits from outdoor spaces at ground level, on the 3rd floor and on the roof. Access to the terrace is via a glass "hatch" that also serves as a skylight, bringing natural light to all floors via the central staircase.
