Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital Complex Heritage Evaluation

The Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital complex is composed of five sub-sectors. The approximately 321,000 m2 complex has around twenty buildings of varying forms, styles and construction methods, many in the Modernist style. Begun by four religious orders, this hospital complex is a unique institutional site within Montreal's urban fabric. Its historical, architectural and landscape richness are contributions to the Rosemont - La-Petite-Patrie borough and, more generally, the eastern part of the island.
In 2021, the site was evaluated its upgrading potential. Several of its buildings and pavilions were considered in need of major renovations. In addition, the vast parking lot that surrounds them presented development opportunities. EVOQ Strategies was mandated to carry out a heritage study of three of the site’s five sub-sectors while also considering the complex as a whole. The aim of the study was to identify parameters for reuse guiding the site's evolution while respecting its heritage values and characteristic-defining elements.

Future interventions will rely on a sustainable approach whose decision-making, planning and actions balance economic, environmental, social and cultural considerations. By defining the site’s heritage interest, this study facilitates a consensus around the institutional complex’s importance, the opportunities it presents and the criteria that should define its evolution.
