Makivik Housing
The Makivik Corporation is mandated to improve the socio–economic conditions of Nunavik communities and to develop a social housing construction program to address the chronic housing shortage in the region.
Panaq designed the initial prototypes to determine which typology was best suited for the Nunavimmiut lifestyle, while meeting the cost constraints of the program. A compact building design and centralized mechanical system allows for greater efficiency and reduced costs. Each year, Makivik builds a number housing units in all of the communities of Nunavik, based on the priorities established by the local representatives.
To respond to different needs, various housing models have been developed over the past 15 years, including single–family units, two–storey fourplexes, two–bedroom duplexes and bi–generational housing. They are distributed throughout the 14 communities of Nunavik.
