Alain Fournier
Alain Fournier is a founder of EVOQ. For over four decades, he has been a leader in collaborating with Inuit and First Nations communities to develop contemporary designs that reflect their local culture. He has been the lead architect and designer for a multitude of projects across Canada. The complexity of building in the North has allowed Alain to repeatedly demonstrate his ability to respond with creativity and innovation to different client programs. Alain has designed schools, air terminals, daycares, multiple and single family housing, research stations, sports centres and community buildings. Three of his projects which best illustrate his design approach are: the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS) in Ikaluktutiak (Cambridge Bay), Nunavut, the Walgwan Treatment Centre in Gesgapegiag, Quebec and the Kuujjuaq Air Terminal in Kuujjuaq, Nunavik.
Alain’s professional expertise in construction technology and practices in northern climates is complemented by his extensive knowledge of First Peoples’ history and culture. He is often solicited to speak at conferences and to participate in architectural juries on Indigenous architecture. He teaches design studios at the Université de Montréal and chairs the Architectural and Planning Advisory Panel at McGill University, with a specific emphasis on indigenizing the campus.
Alain is a graduate of the McGill University School of Architecture and is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC).
