Makivvik Housing: duplexes
Since 2001, EVOQ has been working with Makivvik Corporation to design and build social housing throughout Nunavik.
The first model developed was a 2-bedroom duplex (called J2.2) in wood construction. The design of all subsequent plex models is the result of continuous improvement on the principles used for the J2.2.
In 2005, a 4-bedroom duplex was developed to meet the needs of larger families, and in 2009, variants of the J2.2 were developed to adapt this model to multiple realities, such as a multigenerational unit variant. In 2023, a more spacious and contemporary J2.2 was developed in co-creation with Frédéric Gagné, Director of Makivvik's Construction Division, to meet the current needs of the Nunavimmiut.
These models were built on a variety of foundation types, including steel columns anchored to concrete footings, concrete foundation, geodesic structure, rock piles and adjustable jacks.
