National Aerial Surveillance Program Hangar

The construction of a new aircraft hangar for Transport Canada’s National Aerial Surveillance Program (NASP) in Iqaluit, part of the Government of Canada’s Oceans Protection Plan, will improve infrastructure in the Arctic. This hangar will allow year-round aviation operations in the Arctic, supporting the safety, security, and environmental sustainability of marine transportation in the North.

The hangar site is north of the Iqaluit airport grounds, northwest of the new airport terminal building. The new 2-level hangar (2518 m2) includes a main area for aircraft storage, areas for maintenance, ground operations, and offices. The EVOQ design team made sure to apply specific codes and standards to aircraft hangars and airport projects, such as NFPA409 and TP312. Moreover, since the building is in a permafrost zone, a thermosiphon system will be installed at ground level beneath it.
