Queen’s Gate

The Queen's Gate, the historic main entrance to Parliament Hill, is located in the Gothic Revival-style Wellington Wall designed by Frederick J. Alexander. Aligned with the Peace Tower and the Centennial Flame, it was built between 1872 and 1876 predominantly in wrought iron, with some decorative elements in cast iron. EVOQ provided professional services to address severe corrosion, deformation, inherent vices of the original design, and missing decorative components.

This rehabilitation project employed specialized expertise led by Public Services and Procurement Canada in collaboration with Dominion Restoration. Overseen with Metals Conservator Ed Bowkett, meticulous artisanal skill was brought to each detail, including the complete disassembly and paint stripping of components to repair otherwise inaccessible damage. Missing decoration was recreated based on existing examples and historic documents. The Queen's Gate was reassembled with improved assembly systems that will extend the gate's longevity and prevent future loss of heritage elements.
