Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral
Saint Jean-Baptiste Cathedral is a significant building in the context of Quebec’s modern religious heritage. Designated as a key reference in Quebec’s inventory of places of worship, it was designed by Canadian architect Gérard Malouin and completed in 1963. The building is notable for its large stained-glass windows and its monumental expressionist arched dome roof structure, one of the earliest examples of its kind in Canada.
Informed by extensive pre-design studies and simulations, subtle modifications were made to the roof to replace its obsolete composition and improve snow and ice management at the base of its curved vaults. The introduction of a PVC membrane and a concealed glycol ice melting system enabled the project objectives to be met, while preserving the building’s heritage character-defining features.
The spire, an emblematic element of the building’s profile, was dismantled and will be rebuilt in lightweight concrete, without altering its original appearance.
