Salluit Airport Terminal and Maintenance Garage
Salluit Airport is nested in a fjord 24 kilometers from the Hudson Straight The Air Terminal’s architectural narrative is based on the kanguit, snow geese, migratory birds found in large numbers in Salluit, part of a centuries-old traditional harvesting hunt. The Sallumiut chose the kanguit to represent the traditions and culture key to their community. The architecture and integrated artworks speak with one voice to give shape to and honour the community’s vision.
The large molded composite sculpture, twice reproduced, representing a snow goose landing, is a creation by the artist Benjamin Isaac, a direct translation of his steatite (soapstone) carving model. The mosaic cut out in the resilient flooring, representing Snow Geese taking off, is a creation by artist Charlie Pinguartuq, a direct transfer of his drawings.
