Youth Rehabilitation Centre for Girls

The Youth Rehabilitation Centre for Girls is a treatment facility for girls ages 12 to 18. Extensive consultations were held with local community representatives in collaboration with the Health Ministry to better understand the issues of at–risk youth in Nunavik.

The design approach was to create a safe space that facilitated healing within a family–like environment. The centre is organized into two distinct wings – a residential wing that can accommodate 10 girls and an administrative wing with offices and support areas. Teaching and recreational spaces are located at the intersection of the two wings, allowing a controlled transition between the public and private areas of the building.

Visiting families are accommodated in an adjacent duplex. The design narrative for both the building and public artwork is based on the qulliq, the traditional Inuit oil lamp.
