On February 28th, architects Eric Moutquin and Joyce Yam were honored to attend the opening ceremony of the new CKAU radio headquarters. Among the distinguished guests who attended the event were Paul-Arthur Mitshapeu Mckenzie, the visionary founder of the radio station in 1984, alongside chef Mike Mckenzie, general manager Gilbert Vollant, and other esteemed dignitaries.

During the event, Mr. Benoit St-Onge, president of the board of directors, emphasized the pivotal role of the radio station in shaping the identity of the Uashat Mak Mani-utenam community: “CKAU serves as a vital instrument for preserving our Innu-Aimun language within the community of Uashat mak Maliotenam.”

Designed to embody Innu cultural and geographical symbols, its distinctive architecture and choice of materials pay homage to both the region’s rich cultural heritage, represented by the Pipun-Shaputuan tent, and the surrounding natural landscape. Aptly named Kushapetsheken, which translates to “shaking tent,” the radio station embraces its roots while embracing modernity.
