CKAU radio station: a tribute to Innu culture

June 19, 2024

As June 21 approaches, National Aboriginal Peoples’ Day, we recognize the richness of Aboriginal cultures in Canada. It is in this spirit of celebration that Radio CKAU’s new building was designed.

Located in the community of Uashat mak Mani-Utenam, the building reflects the radio station’s mission. It is designed to “develop the community’s media communications […] through a network of services that promote community development and preserve the Innu-aimun language […].” (the client, Innu Takuaikan Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam) The architectural concept is inspired by significant elements of Innu culture and values. The building’s form and envelope evoke the sail of an Innu tent, Pipun-shaputuan, characterized by its translucency and play of shadows. On the façade, vertical wood elements refer to the tall black spruce forests, while perforated panels feature a motif inspired by the landscapes and wildlife of the Côte-Nord region.
