Benefit event for the new Kenojuak Cultural Centre and Print Shop
A fundraising event for the new Kenojuak Cultural Centre and Print Shop was held on May 29th at Toronto’s AGO—Art Gallery of Ontario— in its Gallery Italia. The objective of the campaign was to secure funds for Cape Dorset’s new cultural centre, which will include new and improved facilities for its world-renowned print shop.
EVOQ, in collaboration with Panaq Design, presented an architectural model inspired by the Centre’s own mission: to become the reference point for Inuit culture and art worldwide, a community-oriented place that is easily accessible and user-friendly. The building, colourful and playful, stands out in the landscape with its metal cut-outs, created by Cape Dorset artists, in much the same way as a road billboard, announcing the Centre’s presence from many vantage points. Other similar artworks will be integrated in and around the new site, reinforcing the centre’s artistic and cultural identity. Construction works are due to begin in May 2015, in time for the Centre’s grand opening scheduled for April 1st, 2016.
