Cœur Nomade Library - Finalist
Text extracted from the teams's proposal (originally in French) :
« Based on a drawing by Dany Laferrière and the desire to assert the domestic character of the whole, the unitary volume is crowned by a folded roof in the form of tightly-packed gables , recalling the unified figure of a familiar village. The presence and expression of this origami-like veil of structural wood underscores the uniqueness of the Ahuntsic-Cartierville / Montreal North Library and Cultural Centre, and invites the public to take ownership of it. The roof is slightly rotated in relation to the main volume, to optimize the south-facing slopes for the photovoltaic panels.
Both the building and the landscape assert a certain “rusticity”, while at the same time emphasizing meticulous, contemporary detailing and assembly. An effort is made to crystallize the unitary form. Artisanal” brick and its alternating vertical modules of flush glazing and masonry surfaces ensure overall unity, while presenting brick as a new material. The compactness of the volume can be appreciated from an overall view, while the detailing, relief and porosity can be seen in close proximity. »
