Macdonald Stewart Library - McGill University
The Macdonald Stewart Library, designed by architect Sir Andrew Taylor, was constructed between 1891 and 1893. Originally the Macdonald Physics Building, the structure features a substantial brick masonry envelope faced with Montreal grey limestone.
Major renovations in the 1980s converted the building into a library. However, the materials and techniques used during this conversion altered the hygrothermal behavior of the masonry walls, resulting in significant structural and architectural issues.
In 2016, EVOQ was retained to provide full architectural services including investigation, documentation and contract administration for the building envelope restoration. The scope of work was expanded to include interior renovations, universal accessibility upgrades to washrooms and entry ramps, selective building systems modernization, and a LEED® certification feasibility study.
