Residence Verger Hemmingford
The cider house was founded in 1994 with the intention of creating an innovative, Quebec-specific product: ice cider. Situated in the midst of an orchard in Hemmingford, the original installations were picturesque but no longer adapted to the expansion of the business.
The Résidence Verger Hemmingford project started with the restoration and extension of a stone house dating from 1842 and carried on with the addition of the premises of the cider house (fabrication and storage) positioned around a courtyard.
The integrated design used to give this construction project its final form is similar to the holistic approach which developed the ice cider and many other award winning products. It acknowledges vernacular genius in a truly contemporary manner.
“Hardly the rustic enclave one would imagine, La Face’s new installations, designed by architect Giovanni Diodati, are the epitome of contemporary log-cabin chic, and a visit to its swish boutique is worth the trip alone.”
Lesley Chesterman, columnist and fine-dining critic for The Montreal Gazette, “On the Circuit du Paysan”, Montreal Restaurants, Recipes & All Things Delicious (2009 Webzine)
Certificate of Excellence celebrating design as a motor of economic growth through an integrated approach (architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, graphic design) in the development of the project.
Mission Design
Some sustainable measures included: passive and radiant heating, natural light in the industrial spaces and the reuse of building material during the construction. The use of local stone and old lumber goes beyond ecological goals, hinting at the surroundings, such as apple crate motifs for the siding and apple wood in the exterior setting echo the raw material of the cider.
